Chinese video game "Black Myth: Wukong" has recently become very popular. The game features numerous grand and fantastical scenes inspired by real historical sites, including two of China's three famous hanging temples: the Hanging Temple in Hengshan and the Qiaolou Hall in Cangyan Mountain.
Located in Hunyuan County, Datong City, Shanxi Province, the Hengshan Hanging Temple is said to have been built 1,500 years ago during the Northern Wei Dynasty.
This architectural complex, "hanging" from a cliff nearly 100 metres above the ground, looks like it is about to fall, but has stood for thousands of years. What is its secret?
Firstly, the location is crucial. The temple is situated in a concave part of the mountain wall, with an overhanging cliff above that acts like a "roof", reducing rain erosion and avoiding falling rocks from the top of the mountain.
Then let's talk about the structure. The entire building is supported by more than 20 horizontal beams, which are made of hard ironwood and soaked in tung oil to protect them from insects and corrosion.
Part of the beams were inserted into the mountain and fixed with mortise and tenon joints, which are very sturdy. The exposed parts of the beams support the pavilions and walkways, each of which could carry several tons of weight.
The main structure of the Hanging Temple uses mortise and tenon joints, considered to be earthquake-resistant, which is believed to be one reason why the temple has stood for so long.
The Mysterious Qiaolou Hall
Cangyan Mountain is located in Jingxing County, Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province.
The Qiaolou Hall is the most famous building here, with three stone arch bridges spanning the cliffs. Two pavilions are built on top of the bridge, which looks like a "sky city" when it is surrounded by clouds and mist, earning it the reputation of "Flying Rainbow Bridge Hall".
The exact construction date of this building is no longer available, and how it was built remains a mystery, adding to its enigmatic charm.
