日子總不會事事如意，一不小心就會遇上問題。陷入困境、惹上麻煩用英文形容會用in trouble（有麻煩了）。

The movie star is in trouble. He was caught drunk driving last night.

那個電影明星有麻煩了，昨晚他被揭發酒後駕駛。

If you don't want to get in trouble, you'd better be careful with phone calls from unknown numbers.

如果你不想惹上麻煩，最好小心提防那些不明來電。

當然，除了in trouble還有其他用語，可以在不同的場合使用。其中之一是in deep water/waters（掉進深水），有點類似中文的水深火熱，處於深水當中，當然就是身陷困境，難以應付、非常棘手。這個短語與宗教還有些淵源，來自舊約聖經詩篇69章14節，"Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters."譯為「救我脫離淤泥，不要讓我沉下去；救我脫離那些恨我的人，讓我脫離深水」。deep waters（深水）就用作比喻困難或麻煩。

Many businesses are now in deep waters as sales drop and profits shrink.

很多企業現在都處於水深火熱中，營業額下跌，利潤收縮。

If the police look into the case, she will be in deep water.

如果警方調查這案件，她將有麻煩。

The professor is accused of being racist. He is going to be in deep water.

那教授被指控是種族主義者，他會引起問題，惹上麻煩。

另一個與水有關，亦用以比喻困境的用語是dire straits（險阻的峽灣），當中strait是海峽，怎樣通過連接兩大片海洋的狹窄的水道，是船隻航行時常常面對的難題。後來strait就用於比喻困難或難以應付的處境，而dire是形容詞，意思是極度嚴重，dire strait就是狹窄而且風高浪急的海峽，即是十分險峻的環境，in dire straits說的就是墮入困境、情況險峻不甚樂觀，現在特別指財政經濟方面的問題。

The war has left the region in dire straits for a long time.

戰爭令該地區長期處於蕭條動盪的艱難狀態。

The economy is in dire straits.The government is trying hard to reverse the situation.

經濟陷於重重險阻之困境中，政府正努力扭轉局面。

Since he lost his job, the family has been in dire straits and is now living on the dole.

他丟了工作之後，家庭生計陷入困局，目前靠政府津貼過活。

經歷劇變 身心困苦

遇上難題，陷入困境，也可以用in the throes（在厄困中），throes說的是痛苦、掙扎，所以in the throes是指處於身心困苦的環境，說的是較嚴重的事故，很多時用於劇變之後，需要處理艱難不快的事情。

Everyone's attention has been on the scandal of the president. The country is in the throes of political crisis.

每個人都把注意力集中於總統的醜聞，國家正陷於政治危機的厄困當中。

He was then in the throes of a divorce. Everything was in chaos and he was very depressed.

他當時正深受離婚的煎熬，所有事都很混亂，他的情緒極度低落。

Retail industry is in the throes as both export and local consumption fall drastically.

由於出口和本地消費雙雙受挫，零售業正深陷危難之中。

一般情形，惹上了麻煩可以用in trouble，若然事態嚴重，則可以用in the throes（陷入了苦惱）。要用比喻，可以用in deep waters（如在深水之中），或者in dire straits（如處於危險的海峽中）。這些用語意思都類似，都是說「面臨困境，有麻煩了」。
